SING SONG SOCIETY
University of York

ABOUT SING SONG SOCIETY
We are a non-auditioning SATB choir at the University of York. We perform a variety of songs from different genres. They are taught and arranged by our musical directors.
Rehearsals
We rehearse every Wednesday evening from 7-9:30pm. Rehearsals are held in lecture rooms on Campus West. Additional rehearsals are held in the lead up to concerts and performances.
Concerts
We have at least one concert per term to showcase what we have rehearsed that term. Family and friends are always welcome to attend these events. We also perform at charity events and get involved with events on campus with other societies.
Membership
Our membership for the year 21/22 is £5. You can pay online on our YUSU page - log in with your normal York details. Membership covers access to sheet music and concert expenses.
Social Media
Please feel free to join our Facebook group under the name of "Sing Song Society." This group contains all rehearsal and social information. Our Facebook page is linked at the top of this website. Family and friends are welcome to like this page too to keep up with any concert information!
Our Instagram is @yorksingsongsoc and is also linked at the top of this website. Follow us to keep up with our events and concerts as well as meeting the current committee!
We also have a mailing list - our weekly emails provide all rehearsal details and details of any other upcoming performances/social activities. Please drop us a message/email to be added!
If you fancy checking out our past performances we also have a YouTube channel.

We are always happy to welcome new members to the choir and look forward to hopefully meeting you at a rehearsal soon.

MEET THE COMMITTEE

AUGUST MCGREGOR
President
Heya! I'm August and I'm in my third year studying Curating and Art HIstory! I've been in Sing Song Soc two years now, and the society has been a massive part of my life at uni, especially with how we stuck together throughout lockdown. I sing bass, and my favourite songs we've performed are: He Lives in You, Seal Lullaby and Into The West. I really hope to see you at a rehearsal or social soon, or even at a concert :)

ROSEMARY BAILEY
Secretary
Hey guys! I’m Rose and I am a 3rd year Biology student. I joined the choir in first year and my fave songs so far have been The Seal Lullaby, He Lives in You and the Proclaimers Medley.
My job as secretary is to remind you when and where we are rehearsing each week, and to answer any questions you might have so email away if you want to know anything! :)

JEZ PIPER
Treasurer
Hi, I'm Jez, I'm in my 2nd year studying Physics with Astrophysics and I sing bass. I joined the choir at the start of my 1st year and, although we weren't able to rehearse because of Covid, I very much enjoyed the weekly socials we did instead. I've made lots of new friends through the Sing Song Society and I'd love to meet you too if you want to come along to one of our rehearsals.

JOSH CAMERON
Musical Director
He/him
Hi everyone! I'm Josh, the musical director of Sing Song Society. I'm a fourth year physics with astrophysics student and have been with the choir since my first year.

As Musical Director, my job is to arrange the music for each term and teach it at the rehearsals in preparation for the concert.

I sing bass and my favourite songs we have performed together are He Lives In You from The Lion King and Only You by Yazoo.

I'm really excited to get the new year going and can't wait to see you at rehearsals!

NIC MORTIMER-COOK
Social Secretary
(they/them)
Heyo I'm Nic the social secretary! I'm doing a placement year but usually a bio student. I'm in the soprano section.
I joined the choir first year because I wanted to be able to sing a range of genres, and if our last concert is definitely a testimony to the range we do. As a society, we've kept in contact really well over lockdown, and I love the friendly, fun atmosphere we bring together.
My favourite pieces thus far have been He Lives in You (Lion King 2), and Disco 2000 by Pulp.
If you're interested in getting to know us/singing, I'm still planning on doing virtual socials even whilst society restrictions are in place, so feel free to join the Facebook group and join in a social or two :) the more the merrier!

MARTHA GURNEY
Press and Publicity
Hi! I'm Martha, a second year Human Geography and the Environment student.

I've been in the choir for the past year singing alto and my favourite songs we've performed so far are 'Just Like a Prayer' by Madonna and 'He lives in you' from the Lion King.

I was worried about joining a choir because although I love to sing, I am really bad at reading music! However, I soon realised that it wouldn't be an issue because we are taken through the music section by section so no matter your musical ability you won't be left behind!

BRIAN COURTEHOUTE
Librarian
Hi, I'm Brian, a Computer Science PhD student. I joined the choir four years ago as a Tenor and occasional Alto. As librarian, my job is to take care of the sheet music and make sure everyone gets a copy at rehearsals. I also occasionally arrange and teach songs.
My favourite numbers have been Rasputin, Space Oddity, Piano Man, White Wine in the Sun, as well as various duets. I can't wait for rehearsals, they're incredibly fun, and a great opportunity to unwind.
